STEM Fair Project Ideas for 4th Graders

STEM fair project ideas actually can be easily found in our daily life. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics form our life, but most of the times, we don’t even realize it. That’s why, the main purpose from STEM fair project is to introduce to the students that those 4 aspects are not scary and we actually use them on a daily basis. But Math can be the most difficult of them all to be shown in a STEM fair project. Math is so abstract that it is hard to find an engaging project for the kids. If you experience this kind of problem, don’t worry. Here are some Math projects you can use for the STEM fair.

Dice Game

STEM Fair Project Ideas

Dice is the perfect tool for learning probability in Math. But your students may not realize it so they will think that it is just a game. What you need to do is prepare two dices and give your students paper and pen.

Make a little competition among them. Ask them how many ways to make certain total number by using only two dices. For example, how many ways are available to make a total of 3. There are two ways, 1+2 and 2+1. It means the probability of a total of 3 to come out is 2 out of the total 36. Continue with a total of other numbers. It will be more fun since the more they practice, the more they learn about probability and fraction. To make the games more challenging, give rewards to the winner.

Playdoh’s Volume

This activity has a purpose to teach the 4th grade students about volume and different shapes of blocks. You need to prepare some playdoh and pencil and paper for your students to take note of their activity. Ask them to make different kind of blocks with their playdoh. Cube, cylinder, prism and many other. Don’t forget to measure the dimension. It will test your student’s competency regarding some math formula and their knowledge about blocks. They will be surprise to find out that the volume of every block is the same since they use the same playdoh for everything.

Math is not so abstract after all! It can be fun and it makes an interesting activity for the STEM project. For student in higher graders, we can even make more challenging projects that combine all the 4 aspects of STEM. But for 4th graders, it is enough to make sure they will love Math more from the STEM fair project ideas.
