5 Ideas for Fifth Grade Science Fair Projects

Fifth grade science fair projects don’t have to be sophisticated or revolutionary. It should encourage their inquisitive mind. However, it will be nice if it tells them something positive for their daily life like healthy lifestyle, respecting others, and other positive effects. The following ideas are fun and simple, but it tells your fifth grader a lot of positive things.

Grease Chip

Prepare at least five kinds of chip like PringlesTM, Reduced-Fat PringlesTM, baked chips, and kettle cooked chips. Use the graph paper for each sample and leave it there for a while. It will show you the grease. Do it three times for each chip. This will tell your kids that a chip with most grease is the unhealthiest one.

Build A Skyscraper

Building skyscraper can take a lot of consideration. You should teach your kids this and let them respect the work. It can inspire them as well. You can invite them to build one using legos in certain designs. Let your kids test it with a little shake to see the most stiff design, and let them try other materials too like tooth picks, sticks, or straws.

Soda Spews

They obviously like soda and experiments. Prepare several kinds of soda drinks they like. You are going to let them find out which one spews the most. Ask them to shake in the same manner. It will be easier to measure the spew using measurement tube. You can ask them to direct the spew to a bowl or bucket.

Blooming Flower

Let your kids know what it takes to grow a beautiful flower. Prepare several containers and fill each of them with water, soda, sugar water, aspirin water, vinegar, aloe vera juice, and water with plant food. Give them chart to compare the results in several days.

Glowing Things

You basically need only phosphors for this. However, for variation, you can try to apply it on several objects like water, toys, on hands, and on many other things. Let the kids learn how UV light works on several things. They will just like making things glow.  


Considering that fifth grader is commonly curious and enthusiastic about everything, it is a good time to give them positive things. Don’t expect them to invent something from there yet. Expect them to learn from what they find out. Give your fifth grader good knowledge by trying these fifth grade science fair projects.
