Cool Science Fair Projects for 5th Grade Idea - Inflating Balloon without Air

Science fair projects for 5th grade must include fun and brain stimulating activities. Sometimes, science project doesn’t have to be fancy and big. Small experiments with real benefits that can be applied in the students’ daily life will be nice too. Inflating balloon without air can be a very good example. It’s easy, safe and doesn’t take a lot of time. Most importantly, the knowledge can be applied easily in the daily life.

Science Fair Projects for 5th Grade

Materials

The materials needed for science fair projects for 5th grade can be easily got at home or bought from the stores.

1. Bottle. You can use plastic or glass bottle. It will not have any significant effect to the experiment. Just make sure there is no leak on the bottle.

2. Balloon

3. Funnel

4. Baking Soda

5. Vinegar

Procedures

The procedure is very simply, but needs to be done meticulously. Please pay attention to these guides

1. Using the funnel, put the baking soda inside the balloon.

2. Pour vinegar into the bottle. Only fill a quarter or half of the bottle.

3. Stick the balloon’s mouth into the bottle’s opening. But please be very careful not to drop the baking soda into the vinegar since we want to watch the reaction very clearly. We can also put the baking soda directly in the vinegar, but the reaction will happen too fast and the students cannot take note of it.

4. Once the balloon has fitted perfectly on the bottle’s opening, let the baking soda in the balloon to drop into the vinegar.

5. Pay attention to the reaction. The balloon will be inflated.

Conclusion

This simple experiment actually can teach the students a lot of things. The mix of baking soda and vinegar can trigger a chemical reaction. Baking soda and vinegar solution will produce carbon dioxide to the air. This gas will try to escape from the bottle, but the balloon catch and trap it. In result, the balloon is inflated.

It is a very easy experiment, but make sure the student follow the proper science observation method. Make a hypothesis first and compare it with the result. There is very little room for error so the students can do this experiment in a relax and fun environment. Just make sure there are no leaks in either the balloon or the bottle. The balloon can float in the air, to make it more interesting, ask the students to decorate the class with their balloon experiment. It will be very memorable science fair projects for 5th grade.
