Steps to Build Bottle Rocket for Sixth Grade Science Project

Sixth Grade Science Project will not be fun without the presence of a bottle rocket. All sixth graders are obsessed about all things regarding spaces, especially rocket. It feels like a dream to be an astronaut and goes into the outer space with a rocket. To let them know that dreams can come true, let us show them how to build a simple rocket. Let this science project be a stepping stone for their dreams.

Sixth Grade Science Project

Objective

The goal of this science project is to learn about the power of water and air pressure. It also demonstrates a diminutive version of how a real rocket launches. Real rocket doesn’t launch using water pressure. Instead, it uses very hot gas which forces itself downwards and as result, forces the rocket to launch.

Materials

The materials is easy and most of them we can easily find in our home.
1. Big plastic bottle
2. Cardboard
3. Duck tape
4. Water
5. Cork
6. Pump
7. Knife
8. Clay

Procedure

1. Make a cone from the cardboard, make sure the size will fit the bottom part of the bottle
2. Wrap the cone using a duct tape so that water won’t come out from the cone.
3. Attach the cone to the bottom part of the bottle. Make sure they attach well and straight. Use glue or duct tape to be sure.
4. Take the cardboard again and make three fins with triangle shape from it. make sure the sizes are the same so that your rocket will be balance when it stands
5. Pour water inside the bottle
6. Put clay around the mouth of the bottle, but don’t let it cover the opening. Wrap the clay with duct tape to keep it safe. Clay is used as a weight for the rocket.
7. Put the cork in the bottle opening. Make sure the size will cover the bottle opening perfectly.
8. Arrange the fins around your bottle
9. Press the needle valve of the pump to the cork and the turn the rocket upside down
10. Once the rocket stands well, start to pump.
11. Once you start pumping, don’t stand too close with the rocket. The power of the rocket launch can hurt you easily.
12. Watch your rocket launch.

It will be a fun experience in the science project watching the rocket launch. Don’t forget to ask your students to make hypothesis before hand, take notes and compare the result with the hypothesis. If there is failure in launching the rocket, check the steps again to find the fault. Making bottle rocket will be the greatest sixth grade science project.
